Every week, The Thread recommends a book that offers a fresh perspective on the news.

In October, in a remote corner of northern Iraq, American soldiers took on members of ISIS. They were working side-by-side with Kurdish commandos in an operation designed to free ISIS hostages.

It's evidence that American troops — "with their boots on the ground," not just from drones in the sky — are confronting ISIS directly. And Secretary of Defense Ashton Carter says there will be more firefights like this to come.

With ISIS in the headlines, The Thread must-read of the week is a new book from Washington Post reporter Joby Warrick. His book, "Black Flags," reveals the genesis of ISIS and the kick start the terrorist organization got from the 2003 American invasion of Iraq.

You can find my Oct. 28th interview with Warrick on The Thread.
