Gov. Dayton and legislative leaders will ask the federal government for more time to bring state ID cards in line with federal standards.
The move is an attempt to ensure Minnesotans can still board airplanes with a driver's license after the first of the year. The federal government has said that states have to adopt the federal standards — or their IDs may not be an allowable form of identification.
In 2009, the Legislature passed a law preventing the state from adopting the stricter federal standards. Dayton said he wants the Legislature to adopt the new standards, but many lawmakers still think the federal government has overreached.
