Republican presidential hopeful Rand Paul is drawing a contrast with Democratic candidate Bernie Sanders as both seek disillusioned voters who might choose either party.

The Kentucky senator told a young audience Monday at the University of Minnesota to resist promises of free college and other government-driven programs as they size up 2016 candidates. He specifically mentioned Sanders, a self-described socialist.

Paul's Minnesota advisers say the two men might be competing for the same backers in the state's caucuses next year.

Paul is the latest presidential hopeful to campaign in Minnesota. New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie held a private fundraiser in Minnesota. Democrats Hillary Clinton and Bernie Sanders have also held events in Minnesota.

Minnesota holds its caucus on March 1, a month after Iowa kicks off the nominating season.
