Michael Phelps is expected to compete for the first time in three months in the Arena Pro Swim Series, kicking off Thursday at the University of Minnesota Aquatic Center.

Phelps is expected to be joined by other top swimmers, including Missy Franklin, Katie Ledecky and Ryan Lochte.

John Martin, sports communication manager for USA Swimming, says local swimmers will also compete throughout the three-day event.

"This series is kind of unique in that you've got everybody competing from decorated Olympians to, you know, local area age group swimmers who have met the qualifying times for the meet," he said. "It's kind of unique that you have the full gamut of swimmers competing in one pool."

This is the first time in over a year that Phelps, Franklin, Ledecky and Lochte have competed in the same meet.

This first stop of the Arena Pro Swim Series runs through Saturday.
