Get out: Minnesota state parks offer free admission Friday

Minneopa State Park's expansive prairie could become home to a bison herd if approved by the Department of Natural Resources following a public comment period. "If we get bison, it would increase our prairie management efforts (at Minneopa)," said Molly Tranel Nelson, regional resource specialist for parks and trails. "And we want to increase opportunities for visitors. It would allow visitors to have that experience and interpretation, to see a little of what the area looked like prior to settlement." Most importantly, the effort would help expand and protect genetically pure bison.

The Department of Natural Resources today has waived the usual $5 fee for a one-day vehicle pass at Minnesota's 75 state parks and recreation areas.

Officials say they aren't suggesting people avoid holiday shopping but that a park might be a fun way to decompress after the holiday.

"We're just suggesting that you might add this in as a stress reliever," said the DNR's Pat Arndt. "It's proven that time in the outdoors can relieve stress, so it's just good for your mental health and your physical health."

Arndt says on Thanksgiving Day the average American consumes around 4,500 calories. A brisk walk can burn about 300 calories an hour.

The DNR has an online park finder to help decide on a destination.
