Ill winds bring flight delays at Twin Cities airport

High winds led to dozens of flight delays Monday at Minneapolis-St. Paul International Airport.

Planes take off and land into the wind. But with the wind blowing out of the north for much of the day, pilots were unable this morning to use the airport's primary parallel runways, which are oriented northwest to southeast, MSP spokeswoman Melissa Scovronski said.

"Certainly we can fly in higher wind conditions if it's coming from the northwest or the southeast or the south," she added. "But once you start getting those straight north winds, that's when we have issues because of the runway configuration we have here."

Pilots were able to use the airport's main parallel runways just after 1 p.m., but anyone flying today should check for delays before heading to the airport, Scovronski added.
