Minnesota courts now allow electronic filing statewide
The Minnesota courts push to encourage electronic document filing over the paper method has cleared a significant hurdle.
As of Monday, electronic filing became an option in all 87 district courts around the state. It has been routine in the state appellate courts.
The state's judiciary has been moving in that direction for years but hadn't reached full participation until Chisago and Isanti counties came on board.
For people involved in lawsuits, it means savings on personal courthouse visits, postage and courier costs. It also puts more records on-demand for people checking on cases.
Electronic filing will be considered optional through next June. Self-litigants will retain the paper option after that.
Court personnel and their government partners are working to make electronic filing of citations and criminal charges standard.
