The Guthrie Theater on Tuesday appointed Jennifer Bielstein as its new managing director.

Bielstein completes the leadership team formed by Artistic Director Joseph Haj. She comes to Minnesota from the Actors Theatre of Louisville, where she has served as managing director since 2006. She will begin work at the Guthrie April 1.

She said she's excited about joining the Guthrie to work with Haj.

"I think with new artistic leadership, and the opportunities ahead, it's just a really thrilling time to join the leadership team," she said.

Bielstein and Haj have known each other for some time, in part through their work with the League of Resident Theatres, a professional association.

"And we have worked most closely over the last couple of years on a steering committee to increase the diversity of our staffs across all the member theatres" of the league, she said. "And I think very highly of him, and I think he's an inspirational choice for the Guthrie."

Haj took the Guthrie helm last year.

Correction (Jan. 6, 2015): A previous version of this story said that in recent years, the jobs of artistic director and managing director at the Guthrie were combined into one position. They are separate positions.
