Today's Morning Edition music is from 60 years ago Thursday, when Elvis Presley appeared on national television for the first time.

He was a guest on the "Dorsey Brothers Stage Show" on CBS. The day before the telecast, RCA released his first single for the label, "Heartbreak Hotel." But the producers of the Dorsey show didn't like how the song sounded in rehearsal, so they told him not to play it.

Instead, Presley and his band performed a selection of R&B covers after being introduced by disc jockey Bill Randle.
