Supervalu has named Mark Gross as its new CEO.

Gross begins Friday, succeeding Sam Duncan, who announced his retirement from the Eden Prairie-based firm in October. Duncan will also leave the board of directors at the end of this month.

Gross is a former bank analyst, corporate attorney and held a variety of executive positions with C&S Wholesale Grocers, based in New Hampshire.

After that, Gross founded a New Hampshire-based consulting firm, Surry Investment Advisors.

He has been the president there, and for the last decade has advised grocers on acquisitions and sales and private equity firms on food-related businesses.

Based in Eden Prairie, Supervalu operates several grocery chains, including Cub Foods, Farm Fresh and Hornbacher's.
