Minnesota Oromo community decries violence in Ethiopia

The Oromo community in Minnesota is trying to raise awareness about the situation in Ethiopia.

According to Human Rights Watch, at least 140 people were killed by Ethiopian security forces during protests over a plan by the Ethiopian government to expand the capital, Addis Ababa. The protesters were concerned that the expansion would push out Oromo farmers.

The government recently said it would abandon those plans, but members of the Oromo community in Minnesota remain concerned.

The Oromo population in Ethiopia is estimated at around 30 million, making it Ethiopia's largest ethnic group. Oromos also live in neighboring Kenya. Minnesota is home to the largest Oromo diaspora.

Tom Weber spoke with Awol Windissa, of the Oromo Community of Minnesota.
