Unloaded gun found in St. Paul school; student in custody

St. Paul school officials say a student was taken into custody after bringing an unloaded gun to school.

Officials got a tip Wednesday morning about the gun at Linwood Monroe Arts Plus. The school was put on lockdown for 15 minutes while staff and police searched for the gun.

The gun was found in a student's locker shortly after the school day began. Officials say it's unclear why the student brought the gun to school, but there were no known threats directed at anyone.

"The student was displaying the handgun to other students in a bathroom area," said St. Paul Police spokesman Mike Ernster. "One of the students that witnessed this told his other brother who also goes to the school what he had seen in the bathroom, and that brother said we need to report this."

St. Paul police took the student into custody and are investigating.

Earlier this year police found a loaded gun in a student's backpack at Harding High School.

Superintendent Valeria Silva says the district will follow its student discipline procedures in the case.
