A 24-year-old woman was hit by an SUV and later died in St. Paul on Tuesday night. In a separate incident on Wednesday morning, another pedestrian was hit and killed in Brooklyn Park.

In the St. Paul incident, the woman and her 64-year-old mother were trying to cross at a crosswalk on four-lane Kellogg Boulevard near the Minnesota History Center at about 7:40 p.m., according to St. Paul police spokesperson Steve Linders.

Traffic on Kellogg Boulevard isn't subject to a stop sign or stoplight at the Mulberry Street intersection, but drivers must still stop for pedestrians in a crosswalk. Linders said one lane of traffic heading west stopped, but the driver of an SUV in the left lane kept going and hit both women.

The women were taken to Regions Hospital, where the 24-year-old woman was later declared dead, Linders said. The mother is receiving treatment for internal injuries and is expected to survive.

The SUV driver is cooperating with police. Linders said it doesn't appear that drugs or alcohol were a factor in the incident. The victim will be identified by the Ramsey County Medical Examiner.

In a separate incident in Brooklyn Park on Wednesday morning, a 55-year-old pedestrian was hit and killed by a vehicle while crossing 85th Avenue near Adair Avenue. Police say drugs and alcohol don't appear to have been a factor in the death.

Brooklyn Park police and the Minnesota State Patrol are investigating the pedestrian's death. The 65-year-old driver is cooperating with police.

The deaths come as St. Paul police are preparing to launch a yearlong pedestrian safety campaign targeting dangerous intersections. Linders said one pedestrian has been hit by a vehicle in St. Paul on average every other day this year.

The Department of Public Safety reports that 40 pedestrians and 10 bicyclists were killed by vehicles last year in the state.
