Grocery retailer and wholesaler Supervalu says it plans to switch to cage-free eggs in all its stores by 2025 or sooner.

The Minnesota-based company said Tuesday its decision reflects its commitment to improving animal welfare practices, but the transition will take time because of the limited supply of cage-free eggs.

Supervalu includes more than 1,300 Save-A-Lot discount grocery stores nationwide. It also owns 200 traditional supermarkets, including Cub Foods, Farm Fresh, Hornbachers, Shoppers and Shop N' Save.

Other Minnesota-based companies with cage-free commitments include Target, General Mills and Schwan's. Several other major food retailers nationwide are also making the switch.

Wayne Pacelle, CEO of the Humane Society of the United States, says it's now hard to find a company that hasn't made a commitment to sell only cage-free eggs.
