Authorities have identified the man police fatally shot in south Minneapolis early Monday morning.

The Hennepin County Medical Examiner says 50-year-old Raul Salvador Marquez Heraldes of Minneapolis died of multiple gunshot wounds.

Police say they were called to the 2100 block of Minnehaha Avenue South just after 5 a.m. on Monday on a report of a "combative adult male armed with a weapon."

Authorities say officers saw the suspect with a knife and followed him into an apartment building.

Police say they shot the suspect as he was stabbing another man. The alleged stabbing victim was taken to Hennepin County Medical Center.

The department says an officer was also treated there for a broken bone. The Bureau of Criminal Apprehension is handling the investigation.
