Today's Morning Edition music is from the Minnesota Opera's new production "The Shining," which has its world premiere Saturday night at the Ordway Theater in St. Paul.

It's the latest interpretation of Stephen King's 1977 horror novel.

Librettist Mark Campbell told MPR's Euan Kerr he thinks audiences will find the opera even more terrifying than Stanley Kubrick's film adaptation because of the power of the music.

"The Shining" is the latest of the Minnesota Opera's New Works Initiative series, a program designed to create new American operas and have them performed around the country.
