"During this encounter, shots were fired by St. Paul police officers," Police spokesperson Mike Ernster said. "St. Paul fire paramedics responded, transported the female to Regions Hospital for treatment of her injuries. The male was pronounced dead on scene."

Police wouldn't say if the man or anyone else was armed or used a weapon in the encounter.

Police also would not detail the nature of the woman's injuries and would not say who, if anyone, was hit by the gunfire from police.

The Minnesota Bureau of Criminal Apprehension is investigating the case. It's the first such case since St. Paul changed its policy to have an outside agency investigate shootings by police.
