The winners of the Nebulas — one of the biggest awards in science fiction and fantasy — were announced this weekend, and for the second time in three years, women swept the literary categories.

The awards are voted on by members of the Science Fiction and Fantasy Writers of America. The first Nebulas were awarded in 1966.

Five women winning Nebula awards is a reminder of the problems plaguing the other big name in sci-fi and fantasy: The Hugo Awards. The Hugos have been plagued by controversy in recent years. Last year, an online faction upset by the rising number of women and authors of color in the sci-fi genre campaigned for its own slate of Hugo nominees and succeeded in dominating the categories. This resulted in many authors boycotting the awards, and in five categories, "No Award" received more votes than named nominees. A similar situation may arise for the Hugos this year as well.
