Driver fleeing police in Mpls. dies after crashing into building

A driver fleeing from police early Wednesday morning crashed into a building in north Minneapolis and died at the scene, police said.

Minneapolis police officers noticed the vehicle swerving when they were going northbound on Penn Avenue and it was traveling southbound. Police spokesperson John Elder said "officers took evasive measures to avoid being struck head-on by this vehicle."

Police pulled the suspect over and when officers approached the car, the driver refused to roll down his window, they said.

Officers knocked on his window but police said he didn't acknowledge their presence. He fled at a "high rate of speed," police said.

Police pursued the suspect one mile south where the car crashed into a minivan at the intersection of West Broadway and Penn Avenue, then crashed into a vacant building.

The fleeing driver was ejected from the vehicle and pronounced dead at the scene. The lone occupant of the minivan was not injured.

Police did not identify the fleeing suspect. The medical examiner is expected to the release his identity and cause of death.
