Today's Morning Edition music comes from 50 years ago today, when the first scenes were filmed for what would become "The Monkees" television series.

The show was an instant hit and the made-for-TV band became enormously popular, selling over 75 million records worldwide.

To mark their 50th anniversary, the three surviving Monkees — Micky Dolenz, Peter Tork and Mike Nesmith — have collaborated on a new album called "Good Times."

An impressive collection of contemporary musicians wrote songs for the album, which is getting good reviews. Death Cab for Cutie's Ben Gibbard wrote "Me and Magdelena," which is sung by Nesmith and Dolenz.
