Art Hounds: African drums, an addiction play and more

This week on Art Hounds: West African dance and drums and a musical about loss and addiction.

Dancer Giselle Mejia is looking forward to Saturday night's performance by Tiyumba, a local dance and drumming group led by Ghanaian transplant Fatawu Sayibu. The concert, "Kurugu: A Joyful Expression of Strength in the Community," centers around themes of war and unity. Mejia says to expect high energy, spirited movement and rhythms. The performance is at 7 p.m. on Saturday at the Jefferson School Auditorium in Minneapolis.

Dancer and artist Robert Borman recommends "Lemonade for the Lawnboy: The Musical!" The production revolves around the story of David, an artist and recovering addict. His found-object creations come to life as characters on stage while he struggles to heal. The production is inspired by the experiences of Hastings resident David Cook. It's his artwork that fills the Hastings Arts Center's theater space. Performances run through Sunday.

Actor Haley Jacobsen will be headed to the Hutchinson Center for the Arts this Saturday for the opening celebration of a show that features work by artists from across southwestern Minnesota. The juried exhibition features work by 30 different artists across 18 counties, including landscapes, abstract work and even a sculpture of a carousel horse stuffed with memories of childhood. The show is up through July 8.
