AG sues Minnesota magazine company for deceptive sales

Minnesota Attorney General Lori Swanson Thursday filed a lawsuit against a Twin Cities-based magazine company for deceptive magazine sales.

Swanson sued Your Magazine Service Inc., for using deceptive sales tactics to sign up subscribers for magazine packages that cost almost $1,000.

A statement from Swanson said the company called people offering billing credits on existing accounts. Instead, people were enrolled in packages that cost nearly a thousand dollars. The attorney general says the company targeted the elderly, some of them for subscriptions that would have extended past their 100th birthday.

The suit seeks civil penalties, restitution and a court order blocking the practice. Company officials could not be reached for comment, although the attorney general's office says the owner moved to Florida after being served with paperwork in the case.
