Understanding coded language and dog whistle politics

Presumptive Republican presidential nominee Donald Trump has been accused of using "dog whistle politics" to call out a base of supporters that respond to coded language and speech, particularly in his catch-phrase "Make America Great Again" and his comments about the Mexican-American judge involved in the case against Trump University.

MPR News host Kerri Miller talks with Ian Haney Lopez, professor of law at the University of California Berkeley and author of "Dog Whistle Politics," and with Melissa Michelson, professor of political science at Menlo College, about the use of coded language in the presidential race and how effective it is at mobilizing a base of support.
