Democrats and Republicans peppered their national convention line-ups with notable politicians, celebrities and citizens to make the case for their candidates. But did those tactics work?

Vann Newkirk, a writer for The Atlantic, and MPR News reporter Brian Bakst joined MPR News host Tom Weber Friday to discuss what strategies both political parties used and the effects they appeared to have on voters.

Both guests agreed that this election is unique in that many people have admitted they're not enthusiastic about either Hillary Clinton or Donald Trump and that their voting decisions may be driven more by stopping one from winning.

"How many people are just going to be saying, I want to block someone from the Oval Office?" Bakst asked.

The guests, as well as callers, discussed how comments made by Trump may have disparaged specific groups of voters.
