Authorities shut down Interstate 94 in Minneapolis at the Lowry Tunnel this afternoon following reports of a ruptured gas line. The Minneapolis Fire Department says the gas is now off and the highway and surrounding streets have reopened.
Officials say a contractor crew working nearby apparently cut into a 16-inch natural gas main.
The Walker Art Center, the area pedestrian bridge crossing Interstate 94, and surrounding businesses were evacuated as a precautionary measure, the fire department said, adding that the gas has now dissipated.
The Minnesota Department of Transportation has been warning drivers to expect delays.
