Restaurants are semi-public places, and that can make for some natural tensions.

They're open to people who buy food and drink, but they're also spots where people want to have meaningful experiences, uninterrupted.

The dilemma is personal for Heavy Table editor James Norton — a professional food writer with a 3-year-old son.

He's done a lot of thinking on this subject and joined All Things Considered host Tom Crann to talk about it.
