Heads-up: I-35E in St. Paul closed this weekend

Twin Cities drivers caught a break over the Labor Day weekend with few road construction hassles. But a big one's coming this weekend: I-35E closes Friday through a big stretch of St. Paul.

The Minnesota Department of Transportation will shut the highway in both directions between Interstate 94 and Shepard Road starting at 9 p.m. Friday through 5 a.m. Monday.

The agency said it needs to close the key stretch of highway as construction crews continue work on the I-35E bridges.

Drivers should expect delays. Northbound I-35E drivers should detour using eastbound Interstate 494 to northbound U.S. Highway 61 to westbound I-94.

Southbound on I-35E this weekend? Get around the closure by taking eastbound I-94 to southbound Minnesota Highway 52 (St. Paul's Lafayette Bridge) to westbound Interstate 494, MnDOT advises.
