1 dead, another hurt in Burnsville Dollar Tree shooting

One man is dead and another is hurt following a shooting at the discount store Dollar Tree in Burnsville on Monday afternoon.

Around noon, police were called to the store, which is located in a strip mall just off I-35W and county road 42, near the Burnsville Center.

The shooter had fled the scene by the time police arrived, but a suspect was stopped in a motor vehicle nearby, said Burnsville police chief Eric Gieseke.

"We were able to apprehend we thought might be the suspect in a very short period of time, which I think demonstrates what we had a lot of witnesses giving us information to help us do that," he said. "But also I think it demonstrates our cops are out there doing what they should be doing, there on the streets trying to protect everybody."

The motive of the shooting wasn't immediately clear. Gieseke said the investigation is ongoing.
