In his victory speech early Wednesday morning, president-elect Donald Trump said, "it is time for us to come together as one united people."

He also addressed those who had not supported him in the past.

Trump said, "I am reaching out to you for your guidance and your help so that we can work together and unify our great country."

In her concession speech, Hillary Clinton said her campaign "was never about one person or even one election, it was about the country we love and about building an America that's hopeful, inclusive and big-hearted."

Former Spelman College president Beverly Daniel Tatum has some ideas about how we can build a more inclusive community — by listening to people who have a perspective different from your own and considering the life experiences of others.

Tatum gave the annual Eugene J. McCarthy Lecture at the College of St. Benedict and St. John's University this fall.

It was a conversation with the president of the College of St. Benedict, Mary Dana Hinton, who also is African-American.
