Today we remember two Minnesota veterans who died this year.

General John Vessey joined the National Guard at age 16 and ultimately became chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff.

Lt. Avis Schorer served in the Army Nurse Corps in one of the bloodiest battles of World War II. You'll hear their stories, in their own words.

John Vessey was interviewed by former MPR reporter Rachel Reabe in 1997.

Avis Schorer was interviewed by former MPR reporter Dan Olson in 2001.

Both were part of MPR's Voices of Minnesota series.
