Kathy Jetnil-Kijiner is a climate advocate and poet from the Marshall Islands. She uses her poetry to educate others about the threats — including, but not limited to, climate change — facing the Marshall Islands and their people.

Jetnil-Kijiner said she is considering a move from her home to Portland, Ore., to escape the threat of rising seas. The Marshall Islands are an archipelago of roughly 1,000 islands in the Pacific Ocean, near the equator. According to a 2015 New York Times report, most of the islands are no more than six feet above sea level — and at acute risk from rising seas.

Jetnil-Kijiner was in the Twin Cities to celebrate the 10th anniversary of explorer and environmental activist Will Steger's foundation. She joined host Kerri Miller in studio to talk about her work as a poet and climate justice advocate.
