Today's Morning Edition music is from "Love Me Tender" by Elvis Presley.

Elvis adapted the melody from the Civil War ballad "Aura Lee." The song ended a five-week run at No. 1 on the billboard charts 60 years ago Wednesday.

Elvis recorded it for a movie he would star in later that year. It was a musical western and also his debut as an actor. It was originally going to be called "The Reno Brothers" but producers changed the title to "Love Me Tender" in an attempt to take advantage of the song's surprise success.
