Reporters' notebooks: Brexit, Philippines and China

The United Kingdom, China and Philippines are all making international news, so MPR News reporter Euan Kerr asked journalists in each country to provide updates.

First, to the United Kingdom where it remains unclear exactly how and when they will exit the European Union. BBC political reporter Ben Wright talked about the latest thinking in Britain and Europe.

Then, the Philippines, where President Rodrigo Duterte continues a brutal crackdown on drug dealers and drug users. His drug policies are making him wildly popular at home and wildly controversial overseas. Reuters reporter Clare Baldwin provided details on the situation in the Philippines.

Finally, China, where President-elect Donald Trump appears poised to use the United States' long-standing "one China" policy as a bargaining chip. The policy does not view Taiwan as a sovereign nation, but rather a part of China. Trump's recent phone call with Taiwan's president put a strain on the U.S. China relationship. NPR reporter Rob Schmitz examined Beijing's response to Trump and his choice for ambassador to China, Iowa Governor Terry Branstad.
