Club Noveau's 'Lean On Me' was No. 1 30 years ago

Today's Morning Edition music is from "Lean on Me" by Club Nouveau, which was No. 1 on the Billboard pop chart 30 years ago.

It was the fifth song to reach the top of the charts by two different artists.

Bill Withers, who wrote the song, had a No. 1 hit with it in 1972. Withers says that he came up with the phrase "lean on me" while playing with a melody on his electric piano. He liked the sound of the words, so he came up with reasons why someone might need support.
