Man's body recovered from Mississippi River

Authorities have recovered a body believed to be a missing University of Minnesota student who disappeared into the Mississippi River near campus in late April.

The Hennepin County Sheriff's office said it recovered the body of an adult male from the river near the Lake Street bridge at about 4 p.m. Thursday. Deputies had been searching for Chris Stanley, a 22-year-old U senior who reportedly slipped into the river while sitting on the bank with a friend.

Stanley's mother, Melissa Melnick, said on Facebook that authorities told her of the discovery at a gathering near the river. The Ramsey County Medical Examiner is expected to perform an autopsy to positively identify the body, but Stanley's mother wrote authorities believe it is that of her son. Her post said funeral arrangements were pending.
