She went on to author 15 novels and win many literary awards.

In 1994, Erdrich came by MPR's studios to talk about her newest book at the time, "The Bingo Palace."

The novel deals with the impact of big-time casino gambling, which was then a relatively new phenomenon on American Indian reservations. She told MPR News host Paula Schroeder that games of chance have been popular with native people for a long time.
