Sex Pistols caused a stir in Britain 40 years ago

Today's Morning Edition music is from "God Save the Queen" by the Sex Pistols which was released 40 years ago this week.

It came out during the year-long celebration of Queen Elizabeth's silver jubilee and British officials were not pleased. The BBC refused to play the song on the radio and many record stores would not sell the single.

Despite that, the song made it to number two on the British pop chart. W.H. Smith, a popular London-based retail chain which kept a list of the top 20 songs on the wall, would not acknowledge the achievement and left the number two slot blank.
