7 Minnesotans nominated for James Beard awards, food's biggest prize
Seven Minnesotans are up for some of the biggest awards in cuisine and food media.
The James Beard Foundation, which aims to promote food culture and honor chefs, announced the nominees Wednesday during a ceremony at Parc by Stephan Starr in Philadelphia.
Steven Brown of Tilia, Gavin Kaysen of Spoon and Stable, and Ann Kim of Young Joni have been nominated in the Best Chef Midwest category.
Brown was named as a nominee in 2017 and was a semifinalist in 2012 through 2014. Kaysen won Rising Star Chef of the Year in 2008 in New York's Cafe Boulud. Kim was a semifinalist for Young Joni in 2017.

Diane Yang of Spoon and Stable has been nominated for Outstanding Pastry Chef. She was also a semifinalist in 2017 and 2016.
The radio program Splendid Table has been nominated for a 2018 James Beard award for its episode titled, "Every Bite is Precious, Buddhist Cooking in Japan".
Andrew Zimmern's "Andrew in the Kitchen" is up for Best Video Webcast, Fixed Location and/or instructional. Zimmern won in 2017 for Outstanding Personality/Host for his shows on the Travel Channel, and has been nominated and won multiple times since 2010.
The "Sioux Chef's Indigenous Kitchen" by Sean Sherman and Beth Dooley received a Book Award nomination for the American food category.
The James Beard Awards Gala will be held Monday, May 7 at the Lyric Opera of Chicago.
The 2018 James Beard Media awards that consist of broadcast producers and hosts, cookbook authors, and food journalists will be announced on Friday, April 27 at Pier Sixty in New York.
