The story of Robbinsdale's Someplace Else

Fifty years ago Tuesday, the Twin Cities-based band The South 40 recorded a live album at a club in Robbinsdale called Someplace Else.

It had opened a year earlier as an upscale restaurant and nightclub. The Everly Brothers, Ramsey Lewis and Sarah Vaughn all played there. But the club owners were only able to get a license to sell 3.2 beer and they couldn't sell enough to make a profit. So Someplace Else was transformed into a club for teenagers.

Someplace Else did not stay open for long. Fights and a shooting outside the club led the Robbinsdale City Council to suspend their license. It closed for good in September of 1968.

But The South 40 lived on. They changed their name to Crow and had several Top 40 hits.
