Art Hounds: The Legacy of the Women's Art Registry of Minnesota

Louise Nemmers is studying art history and was thoroughly fascinated by the exhibit "Roots and Fruits" at the Catherine G. Murphy Gallery on the campus of St. Catherine University. It looks at the history and impact of the Women's Art Registry of Minnesota, which formed in the early 1970s in response to a lack of representation in the art world. Nemmers says it was eye-opening to see just how many female artists were active in the 1970s, and how much they influenced the art scene. On display through Dec 15.

Laurie Savran had a delightful time at the Minnesota Jewish Theatre Company's production of "The Chanukah Guest." Based on a children's book, the play follows Bubba Brayna as she prepares latkes for the first night of Hanukkah. Drawn by the delicious smells, a bear pays her a visit; Bubba Brayna, with her poor sight and hearing, mistakes the bear for her rabbi. Performances run through Dec 18.

Author Lucie Amundsen is looking forward to sitting down in a comfy chair, eating chocolate and drinking wine while someone reads to her. And you can join her! The Zenith Bookstore in Duluth is hosting "adult story time" on Friday, Dec. 14 and 21, featuring bookstore staff and friends reading short stories and poetry. Amundsen says it's the perfect way to take a break from the stress of the holidays and to recharge during the darkest time of year.
