Twin Cities drummer, 21, killed while studying in Europe

Twin Cities musicians are mourning the loss of a promising young drummer who was killed this week in the Netherlands. Authorities in Rotterdam say 21-year-old Sarah Papenheim was stabbed to death. Police were preparing to arraign the man suspected in the slaying, a police spokesperson said Friday.

Papenheim was an up-and-coming musician in the Twin Cities blues scene and continued to follow her musical passion after moving to Europe.

Last year she celebrated her birthday by sitting in with the Bernard Allison group at a gig in Bonn, Germany. In a YouTube video she has a wide grin on her face, as she keeps time to "Sweet Home Chicago."

Stephen Kresko, Papenheim's uncle, said she was a regular performer at clubs in the Twin Cities, too.

"Some of the bands that she would play with, she would sit in and play with them when she was home. She was at peace when she was playing the drums. She was just unbelievable," Kresko said.

Kresko said his niece went overseas after her brother Josh died by suicide in 2016 at age 20. She went to the Netherlands to study psychology, he said.

"When we lost Josh, it really hurt Sarah. I believe part of her getting over it is she wanted to learn abroad," Kresko said. "She wanted to help people that went through what she was going through."

According to the Dutch newspaper Algemeen Dagblad, or AD, Pappenheim shared an apartment near Erasmus University with the suspect.

The paper reports that others in the building heard screaming Wednesday morning and called police. Officers found Pappenheim with fatal stab wounds.

Pappenheim's 23-year-old roommate, who's not named, was captured at a train station in Eindhoven, about 70 miles east of Rotterdam.

Twin Cities musicians have started a GoFundMe campaign for her family to help with travel and funeral expenses.
