Sheriff: 3 tornadoes cause damage in Fillmore County

Authorities say three tornadoes touched down along the Iowa and Minnesota border Sunday causing structural damage, but no injuries.

The National Weather Service in LaCrosse, Wis., said the first tornado developed near Charles City, Iowa, and was on the ground for about 9 miles, with winds reaching 110 mph. The tornado was estimated to be a strong EF1 storm for about half of its path.

Another possible EF1 tornado touched down a short distance away in Saratoga, Iowa, and continued to Lime Springs, about 4 miles south of the Minnesota state line.

A smaller EF0 tornado hit farms and rural residences near Greenleafton, Minn., with winds estimated at 85 mph.

Fillmore County Sheriff John DeGeorge said at least four farms sustained damage Monday when the twisters moved through the area.

The storms also damaged a wind turbine near Greenleafton. Buildings at the Floyd County fairgrounds near Charles City, Iowa, were also damaged.

The Memorial Day storm doused the Twin Cities and southern communities with between 1 1/2 to 2 inches of rain.

The National Weather Service says more than 3 inches of rain fell in Rochester by early evening.
