Author J.D. Salinger has mounted legal efforts to keep a Swedish author's book, seemingly based on Holden Caulfield from Catcher in the Rye, from being published.
Salinger, 90, is notoriously aloof, and in court papers he describes the new book as a "ripoff."
Hillel Italie of The Associated Press says the book, 60 Years Later: Coming Through the Rye, is "some kind of variation of Catcher in the Rye."
Italie says the book's author, who goes by the nom de plume J.D. California, calls the lawsuit absurd. Italie says the book's author is neither confirming nor denying that the work is a sequel to the Salinger classic.
