Hundreds of stolen cars are being located, thanks to car-mounted cameras that automatically scan hundreds of license plates as police cars drive through traffic.
The system, devised by PIPS Technology and licensed to several vendors, takes pictures of license plates on passing cars and compares them with a database. Officers are alerted when the PIPS tools identify a stolen car. The system can work even in low light or dark conditions, and at speeds well over most posted limits.
Robert Siegel talks with Det. Damien Levesque, of the Los Angeles Police Department, about the new technology, which is being tested by officers around the country.
Levesque works for the department's tactical technology unit -- and as we talk with him, Levesque's car scans license plates all around him.
