Minnesota Department of Transportation officials say they have examined more than 4,000 bridges since Gov. Pawlenty ordered the inspections.  

Inspectors have found problems with 17 bridges.  Six bridges have been closed.  The closed bridges are in  Norman, Cottonwood, Lyon and Redwood Counties, a state forest in Wabasha and in Carver, Minn.  

In addition, two bridges were closed and reopened after repairs were done.  Those were state highway bridges on Highway 11 in Kittson County and on Highway 10 near Little Falls.

MnDOT placed weight limits and traffic restrictions on the remaining bridges on the list.  

A private firm is also looking at MnDOT's bridge inspection practices and procedures.  MnDOT officials say they hope the engineering firm will complete its report in the early part of next year.
