Man charged in burglary of Minn. archdiocese

A 25-year-old man has been charged with burglary in the break-in at the Archdiocese of St. Paul and Minneapolis, including the living quarters of Archbishop John Nienstedt.

Ramsey County prosecutors filed the second-degree burglary charge against Kelvin Benjamin Smalls on Tuesday. Smalls was being held in the Ramsey County Jail and was unavailable for comment. The jail records show his bail is set at $20,000.

Officers were called to the residence June 28, 2008. They found broken glass on the floor and noted that Nienstedt's closets had drawers had been opened.

Nienstedt was in Rome at the time, but he later provided police with a list of stolen items, including rings, church relics and a safe.

Prosecutors say Smalls was identified through DNA testing of blood found at the scene.
