Central Minn. residents sandbagging around homes

Residents of central Minnesota are piling up sandbags around their homes as the flooding Sauk and Mississippi rivers continue to rise.

Both rivers rose faster than expected on Wednesday with the Sauk topping out at 7.6 feet in west St. Cloud - well into the moderate flood stage.

The Mississippi moved into official flood stage at 9.33 feet as measured near St. Cloud State University.

Residents worked to build sandbag dikes in the Little Rock Lake area and the Horseshoe Chain of Lakes area. Stearns County delivered 8,000 sandbags and ordered an additional 20,000.

The National Weather Service on Wednesday revised its flood forecasts, saying the Sauk River and Mississippi River are now expected to crest a foot higher than originally predicted.
