Rise in Minn. motorcycle deaths cues safety alert

Warmer weather means more motorcycles on Minnesota roads, and state officials are hoping extra awareness can reverse a rise in deadly crashes.

Last year, crashes hurt more than 1,500 motorcycle riders and killed 72, which the Department of Public Safety called the most fatalities since 1985.

Statistics show that one third of last year's fatalities involved riders who had alcohol in their system.

The state agency is preaching safety measures - for riders and car drivers. Officials urge car drivers to give motorcycles extra space and take extra precautions at intersections.

They recommend that riders don't leave home without proper eye protection, helmet, boots, gloves and bright-colored outer wear.
