Senate's initial OK would ban plastics chemical
The Minnesota Senate has given preliminary approval to a bill that would ban the sale of baby bottles and sippy cups containing a certain chemical.
The bill by Democratic Sen. Sandy Rummel of White Bear Lake targets bisphenol-A, which is found in many plastics and in a coating used on canned food.
Rummel's bill originally included toys and infant formula packaging, but she says after working with manufacturers that she decided to keep the legislation simple.
Rummel cited scientific studies that conclude bisphenol-A can be a hormone disrupter.
Republican Sen. David Hann of Eden Prairie and 10 others voted against the bill. Hann questioned the science and said the Food and Drug Administration has not ruled the chemical unsafe.
