Two years ago, the state Health Department found old 3M chemicals in the drinking water of six communities.

3M manufactured the compounds - known as perfluorochemicals, or PFCs - at its Cottage Grove plant from about 1950 until 2002.

Four residents of Washington County are suing for punitive damages against 3M. The case is narrower than the original case filed in 2004.

In 2007, Judge Mary Hannon denied the plaintiffs' motion to certify the case as a class action involving many more affected residents.

3M officials have said that the trace levels of chemicals in water are not a health threat.

Opening statements are expected this week.
